Interrupted action	I was studying when the phone rang
Background	The wind was blowing when the tree fell
Specific time	We were living in London during the Olympics
Simultaneous actions	She was cooking while he was washing the dishes
Actions in order	She finished work and went home

1. Interrupted action

We often use these two tenses together when one action interrupts another action. The Past Continuous shows the action in progress. The Past Simple shows the action that interrupted it. Example:

I was sleeping TV when you called.

was sleeping → action in progress
called → interrupting event

Another example: She was walking home when it started raining.

2. Background and main event

The Past Continuous can describe the situation or background. The Past Simple shows the main event. Example:

The sun was shining, the birds were singing, so she decided to go for a walk.

was shining / were singing → background
decided → main event

This structure is common when we tell a story.

3. Specific time in the past

The Past Simple can describe a finished period of time. Example:

We lived in London between 2010 and 2015.

The Continuous describes an event in progress at a certain moment. Example:

We were living in London during the Olympics.

4. Events in order vs events at the same time

The Past Simple is often used for events that happen one after another. Example:

After I finished my homework, I played video games with my brother.

The Continuous is often used for events happening at the same time. Example:

I was studying while my brother was playing video games.
