Have you ever wanted to speak about regrets in English but didn’t know how? Well, Third Conditional is the answer, it talks about the past. We use it for situations that did not happen, and we imagine what the result would have been if things had been different.

When to Use the Third Conditional
Use the third conditional when:
- You’re talking about the past.
- Something didn’t happen, but you want to imagine a different result.
- You want to express regret, criticism, or hypothetical past situations.
Examples:
- If I had gone to bed earlier, I wouldn’t have been so tired.
- If they hadn’t forgotten the tickets, they would have seen the show.
Structure
If + past perfect, would have + past participle
| Condition (if clause) | Result (main clause) |
|---|---|
| If I had studied, | I would have passed the test. |
| If she had left earlier, | she would have caught the bus. |
- The condition uses the past perfect.
- The result uses would have + past participle (the third form of the verb).
- If you find this structure too difficult, review Past Perfect and Modals of Probability.
